Opelika fire department named regional training center

OEPLIKA, Alabama (WTVM) – The Opelika Fire Department has been named the newest member of the Regional Training Centers (RTC) team at Alabama Fire College.

Opelika is the 21st regional training center for Alabama Fire College and the Personnel and Education Standards Commission. The city expects an economic boost as the fire department will teach students from across the country.

“This is good for Opelika Fire, but also for restaurants, hotels and local businesses, as we will now be welcoming and training students from across the country at our facilities,” said Mayor Gary Fuller. “The continued growth of Opelika and the surrounding area makes this opportunity even more important for the development of our fire department. “

The RTC Network allows Alabama firefighters to receive emergency response training locally in the communities where they live and work, instead of traveling across the state to Alabama Fire College.

“The Town of Opelika has made substantial financial investments in the Opelika Firefighter Training Center to be able to properly manage a designation like this,” said Mayor Fuller.

“I firmly believe that Opelika Fire has one of the best training facilities in the state of Alabama and we continue to try to improve it every day,” said OFD chief Shane Boyd. “With plans for a new station on the horizon and new staff expected next year, it couldn’t have come at a better time. I know this will lead to a more progressive and better trained fire department here at Opelika and we are very grateful to Alabama Fire College for giving us this opportunity.

“This is evident to me based on the financial investment in their training facilities, emergency responders and by extension the citizens of the Auburn-Opelika region have the support of their fire chiefs, mayors and other elected officials, ”said Matt Russell. , executive director of Alabama Fire College.

Russell added that the staff at Alabama Fire College were extremely impressed with the investment the City of Opelika has made to ensure that its fire department has the facilities and other resources to provide training. in a safe manner.
